Hey friend,
One year ago, I hit publish on my first newsletter.
No grand plan. Just a desire to build something of my own.
Fast-forward 12 months:
âś… 2 newsletters
âś… 12,000+ combined subscribers
✅ 40–45% open rates
âś… Consistently growing revenue
âś… And a growing base of business owners who now treat email as a real distribution channel, not an afterthought.
All while working full-time.

So what actually worked?
Here are the 3 biggest lessons from the last 12 months — plus exactly how to apply them.
1. A newsletter is a system, not a journal
Most people treat newsletters like a weekly content dump.
But if you're in business, your newsletter should work for you — bringing attention, engagement, and revenue.
Your newsletter isn’t just something you write.
It’s a system that distributes your ideas, services, and offers.
You need structure, clarity, and a weekly reason to exist.
👉 Action tip:
Map your system. Ask yourself:
“What happens before, during, and after someone reads my newsletter?”
Sketch out your welcome email, delivery cadence, content strategy, and offers.
Most people realize: they’re winging it.
2. “Free” attracts the wrong crowd — fast
Look, I get it.
Free templates. Swipe files. Checklists. We all love them.
But here’s the truth:
A newsletter is a two-way energy stream.
I give energy, ideas, clarity, and momentum.
I get energy back — replies, questions, even criticism.
That’s what fuels the next issue. Then the next. And the next.
No energy back?
It starts to feel pointless.
I’m not saying I’m always great - I’m human.
But feedback (positive or not) means someone’s paying attention.
And attention builds momentum. That’s the flywheel.
If you’re here just to hoard free stuff — no hard feelings, but this probably isn’t your list.
But if you’re building something?
You’re exactly who I write for.
👉 Action tip:
Filter your audience early.
In your welcome email, ask:
“What are you working on that email might help with?”
It gets replies. And it tells you who's serious.
3. Side hustle ≠side results
Both of my newsletters — EmailBreakdown and Vaughan Brief — were built while juggling a full-time job.
No team. No assistants. No budget.
Just consistency, feedback, and iteration.
→ EmailBreakdown now reaches 7K founders, creators, and newsletter builders.
→ Vaughan Brief has 5K+ local subscribers and local sponsors.
Monetizing? Yes — through products, services, and brand deals.
Growing? Steadily — with retention and intent.
Stuck? Sometimes. But I fix one bottleneck at a time.
👉 Action tip:
Pick one metric and one bottleneck.
Low clicks? Fix your link placement.
Low opens? Improve your subject lines.
Don’t try to fix everything. Just one pressure point at a time.
If you're ready to grow faster...
You don’t need inspiration. You need a track.
That’s why I built:
🎯 Newsletter in 10 Days: Start. Launch. Engage.
đźš« Not a pile of hacks.
đźš« Not magic.
It’s a step-by-step system that takes you from
“I don’t know what to do next”
→
“I just launched a real distribution channel.”
Already sending a newsletter but stuck?

Final word
This space isn’t for collectors. It’s for builders.
For people who have a product or service — and want a distribution system that actually works.
Year one was building from scratch.
Year two is helping more people do the same.
Let’s make it count.
